The Church – Christ
the Head
“Who’s in charge
here?” One might ask such a
question in order to determine with whom to speak as the final authority in
some matter. It is an
excellent question relative to the church. In the minds of some the answer may rest on the
preacher, elders, deacons, or on some committee or group of people. While others do have some obvious
responsibilities, they only have those because Jesus has granted such
through his Word (John 12:48).
Jesus said that
he would build his church (Matthew 16:18). He accomplished his promise as recorded in Acts 2
through the work of his apostles and the divine message that they carried
within them. They then
became extensions of him in the world to light the way for salvation and
for spiritual structure and development. The Bible stands as the divine thought process for the
church that Jesus built.
Our joyful goal
and responsibility is to be the church that Jesus built…to be the church
of the Bible. The only way
to accomplish that is to allow the thoughts of our head (Jesus) to direct
us in all that we say and do.
The way the church is structured, worships, and the means for
entrance all find their answer in what the head instructs.
In a day of
confusion and conflicting messages, the single voice of Christ pierces
the darkness and provides clarity.
Listen…
(John
12:48) "He who rejects
Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him; the word
that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.
(Matthew
28:18) And Jesus came and
spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven
and on earth.
(Matthew
16:18) "And I also say
to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and
the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
(2 Timothy
3:16-17) All Scripture is
given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof,
for correction, for instruction in righteousness, {17} that the man of
God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
(Ephesians 1:22-23) And He put all things under His
feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, {23} which
is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
(Ephesians 4:14-16) that we should no longer be children, tossed to and
fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of
men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, {15} but, speaking
the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head;
Christ; {16} from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what
every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every
part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself
in love.
(Colossians
1:18) And He is the head of
the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead,
that in all things He may have the preeminence.
