Preachers Seminar
North Haiti
June 28 – July 1
Brother Charles Belch, minister at the South Fork Church
of Christ in Winston-Salem and our own Brett Pharr conducted the Fifth
annual preacher’s seminar for preachers across North Haiti. Nearly
200 preachers attended the seminar from in early July. The stated
goals for the seminar were: 1) to learn for themselves, 2) to receive
content for their preaching and Bible classes, 3) to discuss difficult
questions they are facing from a Biblical perspective, during the
sessions and with each other each evening, and 4) to build their mutual
bond in Christ with one another.
The Seminar primarily included an
in-depth review of the book of Romans as well as a review of the book
“The Beginning of Our Confidence”, a study guide for new Christians that
was translated into the native language, Creole. Other topics included
different styles and purposes for sermons, positive preaching, elders and
scriptural worship. The Seminar included 21 hours of study with
substantial question and answer sessions.
For many of the preachers this is
the only training they receive each year. Most have only a high
school level education and did not attend any preacher training.
They have learned from various other preachers over the years. Many
live in very rural environments with no means of transportation to visit
other preachers or congregations. They greatly treasure the
opportunity this seminar gives them each year to learn and grow.
