A DEFENSE OF THE SLANDERED MONKEY

Get permission from the monkey,

Before you claim his family tree;

He might not accept the compliment,

When you say, "He looks like me!"

When did a monkey claim relation,

And conscript us with the silly claim,

That some of us are his kinfolk,

Because we look and act the same

Why not pass around the honors,

In man’s long-lost pedigree?

From the monkey we may see our likeness

From cows and mules there are two or three.

If man with fur was once provided,

As some insist before history’s reach,

Were his ears of long dimensions,

And did he bray in barnyard speech?

When a man chews "Carolina—Green-leaf

Does it not somehow suggest,

He once chewed his cud at leisure,

After grazing hours had past

With man’s stubborn jersey nature,

And bumps that suggest ancient horns,

Trace his speech to bovine language,

When he ordered Menu—hay and corn!

Once he wore a beard suspended,

For David said ‘twas Aaron’s style;

Then with the hilly goat trace relation,

And let the monkey rest a while.
