The Church – The Body
As we travel
down life's highway, this web site was designed to offer practical information
and study on the subjects of God, the Church, Christian living, and
common questions and answers people have about these subjects.
The human body is a magnificent example of the
power of God. He as our
creator, designed us to function in a way that each of our parts works to
contribute to the whole of the body. When God designed his church, he exercised the same
level of design and concern and with the same desired outcome.
The church as a
body operates toward the good of the whole, while valuing every
member. If you hit your
finger with a hammer, the entire body reacts. One hand drops the hammer and reaches over to hold the
wounded member. Maybe the
mouth then opens to provide soothing and the feet run to get further
help. Everybody gets
involved for the care of the one.
This is so true concerning the church.
The spiritual
body of Christ is a collection of people who have individually decided to
respond to the grace of God through obedience and have been added by the
Lord to his body (Acts 2:47).
We as
individuals are of course important to God, but collectively we comprise
a body that has eternal roots (Ephesians 3:10-11), and as such it finds
its nourishment and fulfillment under the capable head of Christ
(Colossians 1:18). By
listening to the Bible, Jesus guides our words and steps.
The church’s
beginning is recorded in Acts 2 with the response of almost 3,000 people
to a sermon that concluded with believers responding with repentance and
being baptized (Acts 2:37-41).
It is a joy to be a part of such a wondrous living organism.
(Romans
12:4-5) For as we have many
members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function,
{5} so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members
of one another.
(1 Corinthians
12:12-14) For as the body is
one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being
many, are one body, so also is Christ. {13} For by one Spirit we were all
baptized into one body; whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free;
and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. {14} For in fact the
body is not one member but many.
(Ephesians
4:4-6) There is one body and
one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; {5} one
Lord, one faith, one baptism; {6} one God and Father of all, who is above
all, and through all, and in you all.
(Ephesians
5:23) For the husband is
head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the
Savior of the body.
(Colossians
1:18) And He is the head of
the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead,
that in all things He may have the preeminence.
(Colossians
1:24) I now rejoice in my
sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the
afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church.
(Colossians
3:15) And let the peace of
God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and
be thankful.
